Protecting Students, Families, and Communities Through Immunization
As parents prepare their children for a new school year, there is often a long checklist of things to accomplish. New clothes, school supplies, schedules, and extracurricular activities all demand attention. One of the most important items on that list, however, is making sure your child is up to date on their vaccinations.
Vaccinations are one of the most effective ways to protect children from serious illnesses and help create a safer environment for everyone in the classroom. Staying current on recommended immunizations not only protects your child but also supports the health of your entire community.
Why Are Vaccines Important?
Vaccines help the body’s immune system recognize and fight harmful diseases before they can cause serious illness. Thanks to widespread immunization efforts, many dangerous childhood diseases that once caused severe complications have become far less common than they once were.
Vaccines protect children from a wide range of serious illnesses, including measles, mumps, rubella, polio, whooping cough, tetanus, hepatitis B, chickenpox, and meningococcal disease. Routine immunization has played a major role in reducing the spread of these diseases and protecting public health.
How School Vaccinations Protect Your Child
Prevent Serious Illnesses
Children spend hours each day in close contact with classmates, making schools an environment where germs can spread quickly. Vaccinations significantly reduce the risk of contracting serious and potentially life-threatening diseases.
Many vaccine-preventable illnesses can lead to hospitalization, long-term complications, and extended absences from school. Keeping your child’s vaccinations current is one of the best ways to safeguard their health.
Protect Vulnerable Individuals
Not every child can receive certain vaccines due to medical conditions or weakened immune systems. Vaccinated students help create community immunity, which reduces the spread of infectious diseases and helps protect vulnerable classmates, teachers, family members, and infants.
When vaccination rates remain high, entire communities benefit from a lower risk of outbreaks.
Support Consistent School Attendance
Healthy children are more likely to attend school regularly and stay engaged in learning. By preventing illness, vaccinations help reduce missed classroom time and allow students to participate fully in academics, sports, and extracurricular activities.
Regular attendance supports both educational success and social development.
Meet School Requirements
Most schools require students to receive certain vaccinations before enrollment. These requirements are designed to help maintain a safe and healthy environment for all students and staff.
Scheduling a vaccination appointment before the school year begins can help avoid delays and ensure your child is ready for the first day of class.
Keep Communities Healthy
Vaccinations don’t only protect the individual receiving them. They also help prevent diseases from spreading throughout neighborhoods, schools, and communities. High vaccination rates make it more difficult for contagious illnesses to gain a foothold, helping protect everyone around us.
This collective protection is especially important for those who may be at greater risk of severe illness.
Are Vaccines Safe?
Yes. Vaccines undergo extensive research, testing, and ongoing monitoring to ensure they meet strict safety standards. Healthcare professionals, researchers, and public health organizations continually evaluate vaccine safety and effectiveness.
Like any medical treatment, vaccines may cause mild side effects such as soreness at the injection site or a low-grade fever. Serious side effects are extremely rare, and the benefits of vaccination far outweigh the risks for most children.
When Should Your Child Receive Vaccinations?
Children receive vaccines according to a recommended immunization schedule that begins during infancy and continues through adolescence. Additional vaccines may be recommended during the teenage years, including meningococcal and HPV vaccines.
If you’re unsure whether your child is up to date, your pediatric provider can review their immunization records and recommend any needed vaccinations.
Prepare for a Healthy School Year
Back-to-school season is the perfect time to schedule a wellness visit and review your child’s vaccination status. Staying current on immunizations helps protect your child, their classmates, and the broader community while supporting a healthy and successful school year.
Important vaccine dates for school in SC are between 4-5 years of age and between 11-12 years of age for booster vaccines required for school entrance. Please call if your child is between these ages to make sure they have the required vaccines for entrance into 4K, 5 K and 7th grade. We recommend you schedule and appointment ASAP during the summer months as appointments fill up quickly the 2 weeks before school starts.
